Work Experience

  • Prof. Hija Mwatawala is a lecturer at the Department of Rural Development and Regional Planning of the Institute of Rural Development Planning who is also an ardent researcher in both natural and social sciences. He has undertaken several roles as a researcher, trainer and consultant/facilitator for various clients and organizations including the Central government, Local Government Authority, Non-Governmental Organizations and the Private Sector.
  • Prof. Mwatawala has extensive knowledge of matters about Quality Assurance and Control in higher academic institutions.


Professional Skills

  • Prof. Mwatawala is devoted in Agricultural Development Planning, Agricultural Economics, Project Planning and Management, Crop production, fish farming, Research Methodology and Animal Breeding & Genetics in dairy cattle, beef cattle & dairy goats, Climate Smart Agriculture.
  • Prof. Mwatawala is also competent in the following aspects: Institutional Development and Organizational Strengthening, Managing for Impact Approach (MFI), Strategic Planning, Baseline surveys, Agricultural Value Chain Analysis, M & E, EIA, Participatory Rural Appraisal, Training of Trainers (ToT) & Public Expenditure Tracking System (PETS).
  • Experienced in the use and applications of statistical packages such as IBM-SPSS, Statistica and R-Statistical Software, STATA and SAS.


Research and academic Interests

The main research and academic interests are in rural development, agricultural planning, community development, livestock production, climate change adaptation and mitigation, rural energy sources and utilization, ecological vulnerability assessments, land use planning as well as innovation and entrepreneurship for wealth creation.
